June 26, 2016 is the First Anniversary of the Marriage Equality Ruling
On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court declared marriage to be a fundamental right inherent in the liberty of the person, and held that same-gender couples may not be deprived of that right.
The Travis County Clerk's Office, after consulting with the Travis County Attorney's Office, began to issue marriage licenses to same-gender couples soon after the Court's ruling was announced. In the wake of the Obergefell ruling, we were thrilled to issue 313 licenses on June 26, and many hundreds more in the days immediately following.
In the year that has passed since then, we have issued marriage licenses to thousands of couples of same and mixed gender. A question we often get about marriage equality is this: "How many same-sex marriage licenses have you issued?". The answer: there is no such thing as a same-sex marriage license. There is a marriage license. For all couples. Regardless of gender. Period. And that is how it should be.
The excitement and joy of those first days following the Court's marriage equality ruling is something that the Travis County Clerk's Office will not soon forget. To you pioneers who are celebrating your first year of marriage...Happy anniversary!
